Bringing the spirit of hospitality into the heart of the home. Spaces designed for warmth, flow, and connection.
Inside Out reworks a 1960s bungalow that had become a patchwork of additions and separated rooms, reshaping it into a cohesive family home. The existing structure was retained and carefully adapted, with only targeted new work added to unlock better planning, storage and day to day ease. The front entry was completely rethought by converting a former bedroom into part of a new double garage and extending the footprint towards the street. This move is anchored by a custom tinted concrete wall that spans the frontage, integrating the garage, side gate and a screened entry garden into one confident gesture. At once a boundary and a backdrop, the wall strengthens the street address and sets up a clear and welcoming arrival sequence.
Beyond the entry, the plan was reset to support the way the family lives and hosts, opening the main living areas into one generous zone that connects directly to the deck, pool and backyard. Here, the interiors were designed to hold both generosity and containment, creating distinct places to gather, retreat and move through the day. Those details are where the project really comes to life.
The renovation has enhanced our daily living experience, creating a timeless home that feels both spacious and efficient. The new double garage, master suite, and redesigned living areas seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces. … The sculptural kitchen, inspired by our love of entertaining, is now the heart of the home.”

A U shaped bench anchors the kitchen as beams converge at a circular column, with ceiling shifts creating distinct places to cook, dine and settle within one open volume.
A series of interior devices give the large living zone its structure and character. Ceiling treatments and feature lighting help establish different moods within the same volume, while a built in banquette creates a place to settle that feels calm and anchored. A full height joinery wall works as a divider and storage spine, allowing separation where needed without interrupting flow. These moves bring clarity and comfort to an open plan designed around hospitality, making it feel generous without ever feeling exposed.
Small, precise interventions improved how the whole house functions. An unused nook was enclosed to form a dedicated home office for the client’s business, and the freed up through-space now operates as a children’s living and play area outside the bedrooms. Outside, the deck and pool extend the entertaining footprint and reinforce the indoor to outdoor rhythm that underpins the brief. The result is a home that supports everyday family life with ease, while rising effortlessly to the moments when the doorbell rings and everyone gathers.
Energy efficiency upgrades
Using the existing dwelling rather than demolishing and rebuilding reduced material waste and opened opportunities for targeted innovation. Sustainability outcomes include:
- Only 32 m² added to the existing GFA
- All windows replaced with double glazing
- Insulation upgraded to improve thermal performance
This approach delivered a more efficient home with a lighter environmental footprint.
Selected to sit comfortably within the Canberra landscape, custom tinted concrete and timber define a grounded and welcoming entry. Inside, the material palette reflects the client’s hospitality background, combining marble, timber, slate and steel. These layers introduce a refined sense of glamour while supporting spaces designed for generous family gatherings.
